Diamond Events for Queen’s Jubilee!

by Ian Richardson on May 17, 2012

It’s that time of year again and the rumble of military vehicles can be heard in the distance as we gear up for the annual Battlegroup North event, taking place a little later than usual over the weekend of 26th and 27th May.

In addition to the fantastic wargames show, featuring some fascinating  and  detailed demonstration and participation games, showing off the incredible skills of the precision miniature modeller, there will be another good gathering of historic military vehicles on display, from Jeeps to tanks!

Also on display are a good number of of superb Living History displays, portraying both Allied and German Forces, Soviets and Airborne Forces, and not forgetting a colourful group of civilians at war! These  re-enactment groups always provide a wealth of knowledge and interest for our visitors young and old to appreciate and enjoy.

A special aspect of the show this year will be a Salute to Her Majesty the Queen by three 25 pounder Field Artillery Guns, providing a thunderous tribute for the Diamond Jubilee.

Following hard on the heels of this great show will be the second “Thunder Day” of the year, on Sunday 3rd June, the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.  Now featuring two propeller driven aircraft – the WWI SE5a bi-plane and the superbly restored De Havilland Devon VIP transport aircraft, in addition to the big  jets! With the Buccaneer, Nimrod and possibly the Victor all firing up their engines, it will be another noisy and spectacular occasion. The Fire Team will be on hand to porovide some fun for the kids in the morning, before the engine start ups begin.

A special feature of this event will be a perfomance by the Canoldir Male Choir from Birmingham, who are performing in the area over the weekend, but have asked to perform a one off mini concert in honour of our Armed Forces. So, thunderous voices to provide a rousing end to another great occasion.

Both these events have been allocated Spitfire flypasts from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight!!
